How do you perform Sumo Deadlift?

  • Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed outward, like a sumo wrestler.
  • Grab a weight in both hands.
  • Lift the weight as you straighten your legs.
  • Do not open your hips until your legs are straight.
  • Slowly lower the weight as you tighten your abs and bend your knees slightly.
  • Keep your abs tight and your back straight.
  • Always push on your legs before straightening your torso.

Common faults

  • Feet not spread enough.
  • Raise weight by pulling ankle on arms.
  • No straight back.
  • Opening your hips too quickly.
  • Excessive load on the lower back.
  • Not good muscle tone in the hips.
